This morning I belly crawled to the edge of the NPR on a property that I had just gotten permission on the day before. I had gotten to my position at roughly 5:50 without pushing out too many birds. Throughout the morning pintail and mallards continued to roost in as the river was half frozen and they were staging for the upcoming migration. At 8:00 a bald eagle flew up the river and thousands of mallards erupted from the river. This was my favorite shot from the encounter. This location was a spot that I had scouted the day before and knew there would be hundreds of pintail. It was a big warm water slough that had been being used as a staging ground during the reverse migration. This day was one of the biggest reverse migration days i've experienced since I started filming waterfowl. There were thousands of mallards and pintail streaming in from the south. This day I actually had to move positions due to lighting and had bumped a good portion of the birds off, though they came back only minutes later. Pintails are one of my favorite birds to film, as they always have so much attitude. This shot was taken shortly before \"The Pinny\" at 7:46 AM. I had belly crawled roughly 120 yards to the edge of a warm water slough and watched one of the greatest reverse migration days of the season. Thousands of mallards were filling into this tiny area and the photo opportunities were plentiful. Days like this don't come around often they are what grasp at my love for ducks. It was taken about 8 miles east on the NPR of the other photos. This spot is a warm water slough that every year holds 8-10 wood ducks from about September-March. I come to film here quite a lot but rarely ever end up able to take photos because of how skiddish the woodies are. This day I actually bumped them about 250 yards up the slough, but ended up deciding to wait them out to see if they'd come back. Sure enough, they did. They put on a show for me for about 45 minutes coming almost right to me before they left for the night.
